Following workout videos safely: form, space and pace
A video instructor can't see you. Here's how to set up your space and listen to your body so the session helps rather than hurts.

The main risk with workout videos isn't the exercises. It's trying to keep up with an instructor who can't see you, in a space that's too small.
Set up your space
- Clear an area roughly the length of your mat plus an arm's reach on each side.
- Use a non-slip mat or a rug that doesn't slide.
- Put the screen at eye level so you're not twisting your neck.
Watch first, then move
For a new routine, watch the first round before joining in. Pause whenever you need to.
Know when to stop
- Sharp pain, dizziness or chest discomfort means stop straight away.
- Muscle effort is normal; joint pain is not.
- Use the easier variation the instructor offers. Nobody is watching.
Check with a doctor before starting if you have a health condition, are pregnant or are recovering from an injury.
