Why your stream looks blurry on a big TV, and how to fix it

A sharp picture on your phone can look soft on a 55-inch screen. The usual causes are quality settings, Wi-Fi and the TV's own processing.

Modern living room with a wall-mounted TV

A phone screen hides a lot. Put the same stream on a large TV and every compression artefact is suddenly the size of a coin. The fix is usually one of four things.

1. The app's quality setting

Many apps default to "auto" or a data-saver mode. Look for playback or streaming quality in the settings and pick the highest option when you're on Wi-Fi.

2. Your Wi-Fi

Streaming apps lower the resolution when the connection dips. If the TV is far from the router, try a wired connection or a mesh point nearby.

3. The TV's picture mode

"Vivid" or "Dynamic" modes oversharpen. "Movie", "Cinema" or "Filmmaker" modes usually look cleaner and more natural.

4. Motion smoothing

Often called something like motion interpolation. It can make films look strange. Try turning it off.

Fastest test: play the same scene on your phone and TV over the same Wi-Fi. If both are soft, it's the connection or the app setting. If only the TV is, check the TV.
